In a major victory for Common Cause, the Supreme Court on Aug 2, 2017, imposed a hundred percent penalty on mining companies indulging in illegal mining on account of lack of forest and environment clearances, mining outside lease/permitted area and for mining in excess of what has been allowed.

Birendra Prasad Mathur is a former member of the Indian Audit & Accounts service (IA&AS) and has held the post of Dy Comptroller & Auditor General, Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser, Ministry of Steel & Mines, Joint Secretary and Addl Financial Adviser, Ministry of Defence and Accountant General, Maharashtra. He had also served as an Adviser, Government of Afghanistan. Dr Mathur has also done a stint as Director, National Institute of Financial Management and had been Visiting Faculty member of Bajaj Institute of Management, Bombay and Punjab University, Chandigarh. Dr Mathur holds Ph.D and DLitt degrees in Economics from University of Allahabad. He has written several books and large number of articles on Governance, Public Finance, and Economics related issues, besides two novels in Hindi. He is currently engaged as a spiritual seeker, author and social activist.
