SPIR RTIs
Authority: National Human Rights Commission
The team SPIR filed RTIs to access information related to the cases where complaints were filed against the victims of police violence in custody, illegal arrest, false implications, death in police encounters, rapes in police custody, and unlawful detention. The authority did not respond to some of the questions in which ranks of the accused police personnel were asked.
While studying the commission's annual reports, it appeared that the reported data was clubbed. Hence, another round of RTI was filed requesting disaggregated data and clarifications of some of the heads of data reported.
In three rounds of RTIs, the data was sought and received for four calendar years from 2020-2023. The information received from RTIs was processed and analysed for the reporting in the Status of Policing in India Report on police violence and accountability.
